
EBITE Programme
Te Tohu Paetahi Ako: Manukura Māori ā Iwi
Te Wānanga Takiura’s Employment-Based Initial Teacher Education (EBITE) programme is a unique 2-year pathway designed to address the growing need for qualified kaiako in Kura Kaupapa Māori and Kura Māori ā Iwi education.
This Level 6 and Level 7 programme allows you to gain a total immersion Māori Bachelor of Teaching degree while working in a kura, combining practical experience and academic study.
What to expect
This two-year programme blends theory and practice to prepare you for a teaching career in Kura Kupapa Māori and Kura Māori ā Iwi teaching contexts.
Kaupapa Māori Curriculum:
Enhanced and comprehensive te Reo Māori development (Levels 5–7)
Thorough curriculum planning and assessment in total immersion te Reo Māori,
Māori pedagogy and educational philosophy.
Practicum Placements:
Comprehensive and diverse teaching environments in home kura.
Gain Māori skills with cultural and professional guidance from kaiako āwhina, kura hāpai and Te Wānanga Takiura pouako.
Graduate Outcomes:
Become a provisionally degreed teacher, ready to teach te Reo Māori, Tikanga Māori, and Mātauranga Māori from primary level to Year 13.
Develop leadership skills to uplift te Ao Māori and education in your community.
Key Features
This programme offers a practical and flexible pathway for aspiring kaiako.
Work While You Learn: Be employed in a kura Māori for at least 20 hours per week, earning while completing your Tohu Paetahi qualification.
Blended Learning: Attend timetabled, weekly lectures either in person or online.
Mentorship: Receive guidance and support from an experienced kaiako āwhina in the classroom and expert tertiary pouako.
Diverse Practicum Experiences: Build confidence and skills through hands-on teaching in onsite placements or in various kura kaupapa Māori to broaden your teaching skills.
Culturally Rich Environment: Strengthen your understanding and study of te Reo Māori, Tikanga Māori, and Mātauranga Māori within and alongside professional teaching standards and lecturers.
Eligibility
To be eligible for this transformative programme, you must:
Hold a Limited Authority to Teach (LAT) and have at least two years of experience in a Kura Kaupapa Māori or a Kura Māori ā Iwi school.
Demonstrate fluency in te Reo Māori, which will be assessed through an interview process.
Have a strong commitment to the kaupapa of revitalising te Reo Māori, Tikanga Māori and Mātauranga Māori.
