Rumaki Reo
Immerse yourself in the richness of te Reo Māori and Tikanga Māori with our Rumaki Reo Programme, a one-year total immersion course designed to build your confidence and fluency in the Māori language.
Whether you're a beginner or have some experience, guided by experienced pouako (tutors) and supported by a whānau-focussed environment, this programme is tailored to empower you to communicate competently and think clearly in te Reo Māori.
Course Outline
The Rumaki Reo programme is designed to accelerate your journey to “speaking in te Reo Māori.”
Tauira Rumaki Reo are at the Wānanga from 9:30am to 3pm, Monday to Friday, with breaks for morning tea and lunch.
During class time pouako teach with a focus on oral language, Tikanga, and Mātauranga Māori. The hōtaka combines group and classroom oral learning, with ātaarangi practical applications (ie rākau whaikano/cuisenaire rods), mahi tahi and whanaungatanga, to create a transformative experience for all tauira.
You will go through the following 5 modules broken down into additional units to progressively support tauira towards proficiently speaking in te Reo Māori and to understand all aspects of te Ao Māori, that are being taught.

What to expect
Focus on Oral Fluency: Learn to speak, reason, and sustain discussions confidently in te Reo Māori, with the ability to complete one-hour whakapuaki entirely in te Reo Māori by the end of the year.
Comprehensive Learning: Engage with 5 units that explore te Reo Māori, Tikanga Māori and Mātauranga Māori.
Daily Vocabulary Growth: Master an average of 10 kupu hou (new words) a day, by the Ātaarangi method using 3 different sentences to grow oral language confidence and competency.
Oral and written assessment: For each kaupapa you will complete an oral presentation, as well as, submit a tuhinga roa (essays) and mahi kāinga (homework) which will increase in length and difficulty as you progress throughout the year.
Tutorials: Akotōtōpū (Tutorials) are offered to students on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 3:15-4:30pm.
Entry requirements
We believe everyone should be able to reclaim te Reo Māori me āna Tikanga.
No formal academic prerequisites are needed, but a passion for learning te reo Māori and a commitment to active participation are essential. Previous exposure to the language is helpful, and students must maintain a minimum 80% attendance to meet course requirements.
